Gentrification Watch: Neighbor-Enraging ‘Burg Club Might Become Daycare Center
Alexander Dimitrov, owner of NYC’s “ultimate multi-national drunken-Balkan disco divebar extravaganza,” had grand plans of turning 60 N. 1st Street into a night club, neighbors’ opinions be damned. “This is a commercial area, and when you bought your property you took chances,” Dimitrov told the unhappy locals. Confident though Dimitrov might be, he doesn’t actually have the state on his side—the State Liquor Authority won’t let him serve alcohol at his Williamsburg venue until he addresses violations at his Lower East Side bar Mehanata. In the meantime, he’s considering other potential uses for his ‘Burg space. He initially said it would become a restaurant with a rooftop vegetable garden, serving pizza and pasta, and then he told the Daily News it would be an all-ages dance club instead. Now, he shares his latest idea with the Brooklyn Paper: he’s going to lease out the space to a day-care center. Of course. The whole thing feels like a dizzying “watch Williamsburg gentrify in one minute” video.
